Four years later he invented naltrexone which had the advantages of increased potency (stronger), longer duration of action, and oral administration as opposed to only injectable administration. Today we continue to use naloxone (Narcan) as the antidote for opiate overdoses. However, opioids like fentanyl, which are synthetics, are now being used and naloxone (Narcan) is not working well. First of all, it’s very expensive. Secondly, it’s so weak it requires multiple doses before it starts to work. Thirdly, it is very short acting. Patients get narcotized unless they are given more. They usually require expensive hospitalization for naloxone intravenous infusions. More people can survive overdose and get into long term recovery if we switch to naltrexone for heroin and fentanyl overdoses. I make a solution of naltrexone that can be sprayed into the nose of an overdose victim and they will start breathing immediately and be completely detoxified. Furthermore, heroin and fentanyl will no longer have any effect on them if the naltrexone is continued with monthly injections (or the implantation of a pellet containing naltrexone every 2-3 months). People have been dying at a rate of more than a hundred a day for years now causing long-lasting damage to our economy. They are also being imprisoned at an alarming rate due to their dependence. To help my patients and protect my practice I have been issuing the naltrexone spray to all of my patients at no charge.
